Ternyata memang ada hormon yang memicu tubuh mendadak menjadi kuat layaknya tokoh Samson. Sehingga jangan heran jika tiba-tiba dalam kondisi darurat orang bisa mengangkat barang berat yang jika dalam kondisi normal tidak mungkin dilakukan.

Rahasianya ada pada kerjasama dua hormon tubuh yakni adrenalin (epinefrin) dan noradrenalin (norepinefrin), yaitu hormon yang menciptakan keadaan agar bisa membantu kesiapan manusia untuk menghadapi bahaya.

Jadi ketika seseorang merasa takut atau dihadapkan pada situasi yang berbahaya tubuh akan merangsang hipotalamus, yaitu daerah di otak yang bertanggung jawab menjaga keseimbangan antara stres dan relaksasi di dalam tubuh.

Saat ada peringatan bahaya, tubuh akan mengirimkan sinyal kimia ke kelenjar adrenalin untuk mengaktifkan sistem simpatik. Kelenjar ini kemudian akan mengeluarkan adrenalin dan noradrenalin.

Seperti dikutip dari Howstuffworks, hormon-hormon ini secara bersama-sama bisa meningkatkan denyut jantung, napas yang cepat, pupil mata membesar, memperlambat pencernaan serta memungkinkan otot untuk berkontraksi lebih besar dari biasanya.

Pelepasan hormon ini membuat tubuh lebih siap menghadapi bahaya, sehingga membuat seseorang menjadi lebih gesit, mendapatkan informasi lebih banyak serta membantu seseorang menggunakan lebih banyak energi.

Efek dari adrenalin meningkatkan jumlah massa otot dan kekuatan yang luar biasa. Adrenalin ini juga memungkinkan otot bekerja lebih kuat dibandingkan ketika tubuh dalam keadaan netral atau tenang.

Ketika adrenalin dilepaskan oleh adrenal medulla, darah menjadi lebih mudah mengalir ke otot yang berarti lebih banyak oksigen yang dibawa ke otot sehingga otot bisa bekerja pada tingkat yang lebih tinggi.

Rangka otot yang melekat pada tulang akan diaktifkan oleh rangsangan listrik dari sistem saraf. Ketika dirangsang, otot akan kontraksi yang berarti mempersingkat waktu serta mengencangkan otot. Hal inilah yang membuat seseorang bisa mengangkat barang besar atau melemparkan pukulan.

Adrenalin juga memfasilitasi perubahan glikogen menjadi glukosa yang berarti memberikan energi tambahan bagi otot. Hal ini tentu saja bisa memperkuat otot yang sudah ada.

Beberapa teori menunjukkan manusia hanya menggunakan sebagian kecil kekuatan ototnya. Tapi ketika dihadapkan pada bahaya, seseorang bisa bertindak dengan kekuatan yang melampaui keterbatasan kemampuannya.
